‘Ghost’ illustrates the artist’s use of the paper dart, a common fixture within Clinch’s oeuvre. This symbol has been recreated throughout Clinch’s career for its association with fragility and imagination. The paper dart is a simple yet transient item, in the same way an idea can be a delicate, fleeting moment. The imagery also ignites a sense of nostalgia and childlike wonder within the viewer, a feeling also evoked from the artwork ‘Tic-Tac-Toe’. In this example the paper dart flies solo over a dark, desolate urban landscape. This work is the earliest example of the paper dart in the exhibition created in 2005. Clinch would go on to recreate this imagery within ‘Pot-Pourri’ in 2007 and furthermore the Goggomobil Dart commission in 2017. This commission involved Robert Clinch painting the paper darts onto the famous Australian sports car, the Goggomobil Dart. The artist dedicated years, and many painstaking hours to execute this project to his utmost highest standard alongside an exhibition of original paintings.
