ENQUIRE

‘Time’ marks an important milestone in Clinch’s career as it was the painting of the same name and subject that was the first ever egg tempera painting that the artist had completed in 1996. In this later rendition, Clinch has returned to the theme, but has altered the composition. This allegorical work explores the passage of time and the human presence. The clock tower peering through the smashed window is a more literal representation of the passage of time, but the desolate building with damaged weatherboards and sprouting weeds is more subtle. The composition is anchored by a central immaculate conch shell. Clinch’s works often challenge the destructive and polluting impact of the human species, and here the incongruous shell points to nature’s perseverance.
