WHAT IS A VALUATION
Fine art valuations is a specialized field which involves a deep understanding of both artistic detail and market performance. We specialize in the field of valuing for the purposes of insurance, superannuation, estate division, and private sales. These valuations are based upon various factors which equate to the current market value of an individual artwork.
This involves an artist’s reputation, provenance, condition, historical significance, rarity, and market demand.
WHY DO I NEED ONE
Having a current valuation for your artwork(s) is always beneficial, however in some cases it is essential. Artworks located in a self-managed superfund require a current valuation to ensure they are compliant with the superannuation regulations. In some cases a valuation report is expected to be updated every 2-3 years for insurance purposes.
An updated valuation may also be necessary for audit purposes in relation to artworks located in a self-managed superfund, or at the untimely passing of a family member. Alternatively if you were looking to sell, we recommend you have a clear understanding of the current value in order to ensure the best outcome.
HOW WE CAN HELP
Our team has a thorough understanding of the intricacies involved with valuing a diverse range of artworks. We have provided countless valuation reports which range from a single artwork to 2,000 artworks for private individuals, family estates, corporate collections, and professionals representing clients.
As a result of our team’s diverse expertise we have also provided valuation reports for large public collections and government departments across the country. Our ability to efficiently handle large collections means we are highly equipped to value and manage artists’ and collectors’ estates alike.
This valuation will dictate the full cost, inclusive of GST, to replace an artwork.
Market value is the value of an artwork on the secondary market. It is our professional opinion of what the artwork may expect to achieve in a private sale or at auction.
We are frequently asked to complete two types of superannuation valuations. The first is to comply with the regulations of a self-managed superannuation fund, which states that artworks require a current valuation. In some instances an auditor will require an annually updated valuation, while others stipulate that every 2-3 years is sufficient.
The second form of superannuation valuation we provide is to enable the transfer of artwork(s) from a self-managed superfund to one of its members.
In many instances a market valuation will be required by estate planners or the courts for family disputes or to grant probate.
